Awards
Cal Sutphin Sr. of Braden Sutphin Ink, of Savage, and Art Stowe have been inducted into the Ben Franklin Honor Society of the Printing Industries of America. Sutphin received the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers 1992 Pioneer Award, the 2002 NAPIM Ault Award, and the 2002 Distinguished Service Printing & Graphic Communications Association Award. He was the Metro New York Printing Industry Association Man of the Year in 2007. Stowe became president of the Printing Industries of Maryland in 1972; he guided its merger with the Washington, D.C.-area affiliate to become the Printing & Graphics Association MidAtlantic, which he led until he retired last year.
Carol Coughlin, CEO and founder of BottomLine Growth Strategies Inc., of Towson, has been awarded the Certified Exit Planning Advisor designation after completing the Exit Planning Institute’s CEPA program. The designation is for business advisors who work closely with owners of privately held companies.
E-Structors, specializing in the secure destruction and recycling of computers, electronics and documents, has been named the “Green Technology Company of the Year” by the Howard Technology Council. The company, based in Elkridge, is involved in the disposal and recycling of electronics that can be harmful to the environment.
Gynecologic oncologist Dwight Im, director of the Gynecologic Oncology Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, has been honored with a Patients’ Choice recognition. These awards are based on patients’ reviews provided to www.vitals.com. A graduate of Princeton University, Im completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowship at Hopkins.
Shukoor Ahmed received Strayer University’s Outstanding Alumnus Award during the Dec. 5 commencement ceremony in Baltimore. Ahmed founded V-Empower Inc., a service provider of technology solutions, in 2000 that now has more than 100 employees across four continents. In 2006, Deloitte voted V-Empower the “Fastest Growing Company in Maryland” and the Washington Business Journal recognized the company for its contributions made to nonprofit organizations.
The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore has been granted a three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.
The Baltimore-based Institute for Faith-based Leadership and Philanthropy has honored two Children’s Guild employees. Treatment foster care recruiter Kay Brazile was named Foster Parent of the Year; Nichole Leonard, director of family life education, was recognized for helping IFLP secure sponsorship and support from the Maryland Association of Resources for Family and Youth. The Children’s Guild, a nonprofit organization in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties, operates day schools, group and foster homes, a mental health center and other services for children and adolescents who are traumatized, autistic and have multiple disabilities.
Boards
Richard P. Barth, dean of the University of Maryland School of Social Work, has been chosen by fellow board members as chair for the inaugural board of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. The academy will be focused on social work policy and promoting excellence in research, scholarship, and practice. Barth will be the 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society for Social Work and Research. He previously has been the National Association of Social Workers’ Researcher of the Year and a winner of the Flynn Prize for Research from the University of Southern California.
The Frederick County Business Development Advisory Council has appointed Mike Kidder as chairman and Veronica Mozzano as vice-chairman of the organization, which advises the Frederick County Board of Commissioners and the Office of Economic Development. Kidder, a member of council for four years, works with Bechtel Corp.’s communications staff. Mozzano is executive vice president and chief lending officer at Woodsboro Bank in Frederick.
Health Facilities Association of Maryland has elected board officers for 2010: Eric Shope, of Stella Maris, chairman; John Spadaro, SavaSeniorCare, vice chairman; Clifton Porter, HCR ManorCare, treasurer; and Stephen Allen, White Oak Senior Care, past chair. HFAM is a voluntary provider community association that represents skilled nursing, sub-acute facilities, and assisted living programs.
Mark Butler has joined the board of directors of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore that works to help build character and teach critical life lessons to at-risk youth through baseball and softball-themed programs in distressed communities. Butler is a founder of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and its president and CEO. He co-owns the Harrisburg Senators, Eastern League AA affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
Communications
Joseph LaMarca Jr. has been named vice president, communications, for Lockheed Martin’s aeronautics business area, in Bethesda. He previously was a vice president of Bell Helicopter and with Boeing. Before that, LaMarca served in the Air Force, including as commander of military and civilian personnel of the 45th Space Wing at Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Education
Karie Kilgore has begun a six-month term as a visiting senior director with the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, in Baltimore, helping implement strategic goals and objectives. Kilgore is a member of the Social Security Administration’s Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program. She holds a master’s degree in information systems from Johns Hopkins University.
Finance
Christopher P. Parr has launched Columbia-based Parr Financial Solutions Inc., to provide fee-only personal financial consulting and independent investment management services, including cash flow management, estate planning, retirement planning, and professional portfolio management. In 1992 he formed PARR Financial Solutions, which merged with Financial Advantage Inc. in 2001. Parr holds an MBA in finance from Loyola College in Maryland, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Western Maryland College.
Health Care
Kristian Hochberg has been appointed medical director of the interventional vascular lab at Carroll Hospital Center’s Vascular Center in Westminster. He specializes in the treatment of peripheral artery disease, complex open surgery and the latest minimally invasive endovascular procedures, including ultrasound-guided pseudoaneurysm repair and endovascular stent graft repair. Carroll Hospital Center is a nonprofit, acute-care facility.
Dr. Kathy J. Helzlsouer, director of the Prevention and Research Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, has been named chair of the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the American Association for Cancer Research. She also is chair of the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control, which advises the governor and other officials, organizations and the public on policies and programs. Helzlsouer joined Mercy Medical Center’s Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine in 2004 to lead its efforts to expand the base of knowledge and research in women’s health.
Curt McCormick has been hired by MedStar Health as director of corporate communications and public relations. He most recently worked in the advocacy and member services division of the American Hospital Association. MedStar Health is a not-for-profit, regional health care system with a community-based network of nine hospitals and other health-care services in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Calvin Johnson has been appointed president of the hospitals division of Sodexo Inc., of Gaithersburg. He succeeds Dick Desrochers, who has accepted a senior leadership position. Johnson had been division vice president for hospitals in the corporation’s western region. Sodexo is a provider of comprehensive service solutions to customers in corporations, health care, long term care, retirement, schools, higher education, government and remote sites.
Manufacturing
Ernest Brodbeck Jr. has been promoted to CEO of Neschen Corp. and Neschen Americas, of Elkridge. He had been president and chief operating officer for Neschen Americas, which manufactures and markets products including film and liquid laminating equip¬ment and materials, textile and PVC printing media, pressure-sensitive vinyl, mounting adhesives and tapes, display systems and archiving supplies.
Joseph LaMarca Jr. has been named vice president, communications, for Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics business area. He previously served as Bell Helicopter’s vice president of communications. Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Bethesda, is a global security company that is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.
Restaurants
Stephen Carey has been named executive chef of Milan, a new restaurant in Baltimore. He has worked locally as chef de cuisine for Brewer’s Art and most recently as the executive chef at Lucy’s Restaurant. Milan, at the edge of Harbor East and Little Italy, will have an Italian/Mediterranean infused menu, and an adjoining lower-level café, Intermezzo.
Real Estate
Kim Foster has been hired as controller of CSG Partners, a full-service real estate development firm headquartered in Baltimore. Foster, a certified public accountant, was formerly property divisional controller for Manekin. She has a degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore.
Marie Spearman has been hired as controller of Mid-Atlantic Properties. She previously was chief financial officer of Allstate Floors. Spearman has a degree in accounting from Towson University. Mid-Atlantic Properties is a privately owned, full-service development and management company based in Lutherville.
