Advocacy
Michele L. Whelley has been named president and CEO of the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance. The Baltimore native’s most recent position was CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of New Haven. She previously was senior vice president of Colliers Pinkard’s real estate strategic advisory group and president of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. The Transportation Alliance is an independent, privately funded organization founded in 2007 by Baltimore regional business, civic, and philanthropic leaders to focus attention on the area’s transportation needs.
Architecture
Paul Dibos has been hired to lead the Baltimore office of the SHW Group. Among his degrees is a B.A. from the University of Maryland. He has spoken about sustainable design has at several regional and national conferences. The SHW Group, which specializes in the design of educational facilities, also has offices in Washington, D.C., Charlottesville, Va., Detroit, and four cities in Texas.
Awards
Dr. Kim Solberg, chairperson of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center Department of Psychiatry, of Towson, recently was named the winner of GBMC’s 2010 Nancy J. Petrarca Compassionate Caregiver Award. The award was established in 2008 to honor caregivers who display extraordinary compassion in caring for patients and their families. Solberg was on the GBMC medical staff from 1994 to 2002 and then returned as chair of the psychiatry department in 2006. Four GBMC staff members received Honorable Mention recognition: Dottie Martin, a 41-year GBMC employee; Kathy Ruane, a five-year employee; Brian McCagh, a three-year GBMC employee; and registered nurse Lori Kantziper, an eight-year employee.
The College of Southern Maryland, of La Plata, received two awards from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence at its annual awards ceremony June 1 in Bethesda. A seven-time Workplace Excellence Award recipient, CSM added a 2009 Health and Wellness Trailblazers Award this year. The awards highlight organizations that promote professional fulfillment and personal wellness at work, at home and in the community.
Paula Martino recently received the College of Southern Maryland’s Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award for her teaching of art history. Martino, president of the Charles County Archaeological Society, spent three weeks last summer at an excavation of Kabri, a Canaanite palace in Israel, helping uncover ancient art. She also goes beyond books and PowerPoint presentations with her classes: in 2005 to 2007, she took students to Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Capri, Delphi and Athens. Martino works full-time as the government affairs director of the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors. Another CSM instructor, Tom Russ, who teaches environmental technology and management, won the college’s Faculty Excellence Award for full-time professors.
George Dredden, a former Frederick businessman and entrepreneur, has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Maryland Economic Development Association. Dredden served on the Frederick County Business Development Advisory Council for six years, including as chairman. He also served as chairman of the Frederick County Planning Commission, and was active with the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, Frederick Memorial Hospital board of directors, the Rotary Club of Frederick, among other organizations. Dredden has been a champion for small and minority-owned businesses and helped establish Frederick County’s first technology business incubator.
The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Baltimore affiliate, honored business and education leaders at its fundraising “Soul of the City” event June 2: J. Michael Riley, vice president of community relations, M&T Bank, Donor of the Year; Reginald G. Exum, vice president/community relations officer, South Atlantic Region, Citi, Volunteer of the Year; Councilman Carl Stokes, chief operating officer, and Kirk Gaddy, chief executive officer and head of school, Bluford Drew Jemison S.T.E.M. Academy, Administrator/Principal of the Year; Chad Babcock, Patterson High School, Teacher of the Year; Michael D. Thomas, head of Learning to Work for Baltimore City Public Schools, Intrapreneur of the Year; Cheryl Townsend, owner, Red Springs Café, Partner of the Year; NFTE Baltimore provides entrepreneurship curriculum to students in middle schools and high schools in low-income communities.
Brian Rosenbaum and Kathie Okun, of Capital Financial Partners, Hunt Valley, have attained membership in the Million Dollar Round Table, an international, independent association consists of fewer than 1 percent of life insurance and financial services professionals. Capital Financial Partners provides insurance and investments through a local network of financial professionals.
Volunteers of America Chesapeake, the local affiliate of the national human services organization, received the Special Recognition Award for Dedicated Service and a ‘Can Do’ Attitude from the Prince George’s County Government Department of Family Services for two of its programs. Prince George’s County Mental Health Services and Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Shelter Plus Care program were honored for their work with mental health patients. The Volunteers of America chapter’s Residential Rehabilitation Program also was recognized for enabling patients to live in a healthy and nonrestrictive environment. The patients are assigned daily tasks and household responsibilities, attend classes and participate in group activities.
Boards
Viola V. Bell has been appointed to the board of directions of Greater Baltimore AHC, a not-for-profit developer of affordable housing in the Baltimore region. She is program director at the NIA Performing Arts & Community Learning Center. Bell has an undergraduate degree from Coppin State College, and a master’s of education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education from Loyola University Maryland.
The Maryland Economic Development Association has elected its 2010-2011 board of directors. president: David S. Iannucci, executive director, Baltimore County Department of Economic Development; vice president: Laureen M. Boyer, executive director, Frederick County Office of Economic Development; secretary: Lawrence F. Twele, director, Carroll County Department of Economic Development; treasurer: Sean M. Looney, Comcast’s vice president of state government affairs. Newly chosen to the board were: John R. Devine, principal, Miles & Stockbridge; Keasha N. Haythe, director, Dorchester County Economic Development; and John Henry King, economic development director for Bowie.
Construction
Dwight H. Van Inwegen has joined W.R. Grace & Co. as chief financial officer for Grace Construction Products. He has responsibility for worldwide financial management activities.
Engineering
Mark A. Albe has been promoted to senior associate of national environmental engineering and consulting firm Malcolm Pirnie Inc. Working from the firm’s Baltimore office, he focuses on the business development and delivery of environmental services to federal clients throughout the United States and Europe. Albe has extensive experience working with U.S. Army installations as an active duty U.S. Army officer.
Grants
The Maryland Humanities Council has received a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to promote literacy through its One Maryland One Book program. The year-long project brings reading and discussion programs to communities throughout the state. It culminates with two months of public programs, using literature to spur conversations on issues critical to Marylanders. The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational website, Verizon Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org), and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence.
Health Care
Margaret Mortenson has joined St. Joseph Medical Center, of Towson, on May 28 as its new executive vice president and chief operating officer. She most recently was system vice president of operations at St. Vincent’s HealthCare in Jacksonville, Fla. She previously served as executive director of cardiovascular services at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and held administrative positions at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and University of Virginia Medical Center. She is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Patrick A. Turnes has joined the Worthington Personal Physicians Group, of Reisterstown, a part of the Mercy Medical Center network. Turnes, who is certified in internal medicine, received his degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Maryland General Hospital. Worthington Personal Physicians offers primary and specialty care services in northwestern Baltimore County and Carroll County.
Walter Furlong has been appointed vice president, Strategy and Business Development, at St. Joseph Medical Center, of Baltimore. Furlong is responsible for strategy, planning, business development, communications and marketing. He previously was regional vice president of strategy and business development for the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, where he was responsible for their Montana region. Furlong has also held executive positions at Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Texas.
Mark O. Thornton has been appointed senior vice president of development and chief medical officer of Novavax, of Rockville. Thornton previously was a medical officer in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s immunology and infectious diseases branch and division of therapeutic biologic oncology products; chief medical officer of ZioPharm Oncology; managing director of clinical and regulatory affairs at Angiotech Pharmaceuticals; and, most recently, senior vice president of product development at GenVec. Novavax is a biopharmaceutical company that creates vaccines to address infectious diseases worldwide, including H1N1, using advanced proprietary virus-like particle technology.
Hospitality
Judy Wilbur has been named director of sales and marketing of Baltimore’s Tremonts. She was with Interstate Hotels & Resorts from 2000 to this year as director of sales at the Radisson Hotel at Cross Keys. Wilbur previously worked at the Peabody Court Hotel and the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor. She is on the advisory board for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the board of directors for HSMAI.
Information Technology
Jody Costa has been appointed marketing communications manager of Barcoding Inc., of Baltimore. She previously served as executive editor for Marketplace Books and Traders’ Library in Glenelg. Before that, Costa spent three years as a lead proposal and technical writer at Stout Causey Consulting in Hunt Valley. Costa has a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Barcoding Inc. is a systems integrator specializing in the development, deployment and management of customized enterprise-wide mobility systems.
Investing
Christine Neri has been appointed an area manager in the M&T Investment Group for the Greater Baltimore and southeast Pennsylvania areas. She will oversee both M&T Bank’s wealth advisory services and M&T Securities’ brokerage services in these areas. Neri is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor and has received Certified Financial PlannerT certification. She is a member of the York County Estate Planning Council and the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center Endowment Committee.
Charles Tiedebohl has been appointed a wealth advisor in the M&T Investment Group in the Greater Baltimore region, working out of Towson. He works primarily with business owners to coordinate and deliver investment solutions and services, and offer M&T Securities brokerage services, investment products and insurance. Tiedebohl earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland, and has the Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter designations. He is an adjunct professor at Towson University and a former member of the Baltimore Estate Planning Council.
Landscaping
Bill Cobb has been hired as information systems manager of Ruppert Landscape, of Laytonsville. He will be involved with helping the company to develop operational and strategic perspective, upgrading software and programming. He had worked as a branch manager for the environmental design group at TruGreen Landcare.
Marketing
Leah Shearer has been named a junior associate of Warschawski, a full service branding, marketing, public relations, advertising and interactive agency in Baltimore, after completing its three-month assistant associate program.
Chris Wayman has been appointed vice president and general manager of Merkle to lead the Columbia firm’s mobile practice. Wayman had been serving as vice president of global sales at iLoop Mobile. Previously, he was senior director of business development at Volantis Systems LTD.
Public Relations
Bridget M. Forney has become a social media strategist at Profiles Inc., of Baltimore. She will continue her role as an account executive with the public relations, marketing and events firm. Forney joined Profiles after graduating from Stevenson University and completing five professional internships in nonprofit, government, marketing and broadcast settings.
