Awards
Yolanda Copeland, senior vice president of patient services and chief nursing officer at Saint Agnes Hospital, of Baltimore, recently received the 2010 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award in the category of Advancing & Leading the Profession for the DC/MD/VA region. She will compete with regional winners from across the country for the national Nurse of the Year Awards in the fall. Copeland, a nurse for more than 30 years, has brought cohesion and professionalism to the nursing department, hospital officials say. Saint Agnes nurses now participate on many interdisciplinary committees, councils and work groups, and have begun a three-year process to earn the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Status.
Angie Barnett, president and CEO of BBB|Greater Maryland, received a Brava! Women Business Achievement Award on July 23. The awards are granted for making strides in business and building a stronger community financially, philanthropically, and through leadership. Barnett has worked with BBB|Greater Maryland since March 2006, providing alerts and expert advice on scams and the nonprofit organization’s Standards for Trust for 18 counties and Baltimore City. Before joining BBB, she served five years as the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s vice president of membership. Barnett was the founding director of a community-based program that brought education and workplace skills to young parents. She also assisted the Cecil County Commission in implementing a HotSpot program to reduce crime. Barnett is a 2000 graduate of Leadership Maryland.
Catherine Miller, clinical educator for Howard County General Hospital’s intensive care and special care units, is the regional winner of the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award for Teaching. She will go on to the national competition in the fall. Miller, a nurse since 1984 and on staff at HCGH for 20 years, became the educational manager for the ICU in 2002. Also, Ellen Merrill was one of five finalists in the Clinical Care category of the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards.
The Eastport Yacht Club Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Eastport Yacht Club, recently awarded the first Maritime Skills Training scholarship to Leif Carlsson, a graduate of Broadneck High School. Carlsson, who attended the Anne Arundel County public school system’s Marine Repair Technology program at Center of Applied Technology-South, will attend the New England Institute of Technology’s marine trades program in Warwick, R.I.
The SignGuru application of GableSigns, of Baltimore, was named Best New Product by the Society for Environmental Graphic Designers at its national conference last month. SignGuru is an application, fully functional on the Apple iPhone, iTouch and iPod, that assists with the specification, design, and construction of signs and graphics.
Crosby Marketing Communications, of Annapolis and Washington, D.C., received 11 Best in Maryland Awards recently from the Maryland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The company provides integrated advertising, public relations, direct-response and interactive services to regional and national market leaders in a variety of industries.
Darryl A. Stokes, vice president of engineering and standards for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., received a Ray of Hope Award on June 19 from Black Professional Men Inc., a nonprofit organization created to address social, economic and political issues affecting the African-American community, with a focus on the African-American male. Stokes graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute before earning bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering. He has been with BGE for 28 years, beginning as a summer student while pursuing his undergraduate degree. Stokes now leads an organization within BGE responsible for the development and maintenance of major construction standards and work procedures, procurement of major electrical and gas transmission and distribution equipment, and adherence to federal, state and local regulations. As BGE’s chief engineer, he is the primary liaison to Maryland Public Service Commission.
Dr. Ursula McClymont, a Baltimore Medical System physician, is one of eight individuals selected for the Practice Change Fellows program aimed at building leadership capacity among physicians, nurses and social workers who have operational responsibility for geriatric care. This national program awards $90,000 and the support of local and national mentors to help fellows develop a new service or aging program in their community. McClymont practices geriatric and family medicine and is the director of Baltimore Medical System’s Orleans Square facility in East Baltimore.
The marketing department of THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore was recently awarded a Marketing Excellence Award in the nonprofit category from the Baltimore chapter of the American Marketing Association. The award is for a 2009 campaign, Days of Decision, which was designed to increase visibility and understanding about the struggles of individuals in the Jewish community.
Peter and Beth Rosenwald, along with their sons, Andrew and Jacob Rosenwald, received the Dorsey Family Service Award on June 15 from the American Red Cross of Central Maryland. Peter Rosenwald is a member at Gordon Feinblatt; he has served on the Red Cross board of directors since 2002, the past two years as chairman. Beth Rosenwald is senior vice president of Legg Mason/Smith Barney; she was one of the first members of the Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a group of women philanthropists supporting the organization’s humanitarian mission. Andrew Rosenwald was the top fundraiser for the Red Cross Measles Campaign, a program to eradicate the child-killing disease in developing countries. Jacob Rosenwald is serving as a summer intern with the American Red Cross International Service in Washington, D.C.; he has been a volunteer at the Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center.
Sr. Rita Thomas, of Bon Secours, in Marriottsville, received the Catholic Health Association’s 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s Catholic Health Assembly in Denver June 13 to 15 in recognition of her accomplishments over five decades to strengthen the Catholic health ministry. She served as CEO and board president of several local facilities after beginning her health care career as a registered professional nurse. In 1973, Sr. Rita was elected provincial of the U.S. Province of the Sisters of Bon Secours. During her six years in that position, she established the national position of health care coordinator and convened all of the Bon Secours facility CEOs to form the Bon Secours Health Care Commission, laying the foundation for the Bon Secours Health System. She served as chairperson of the Bon Secours Health System board from 1994 to 1996.
Boards
The Maryland Economic Development Association has elected its 2010-2011 board of directors. president: David S. Iannucci, executive director, Baltimore County Department of Economic Development; vice president: Laureen M. Boyer, executive director, Frederick County Office of Economic Development; secretary: Lawrence F. Twele, director, Carroll County Department of Economic Development; treasurer: Sean M. Looney, Comcast’s vice president of state government affairs. Newly chosen to the board were: John R. Devine, principal, Miles & Stockbridge; Keasha N. Haythe, director, Dorchester County Economic Development; and John Henry King, economic development director for Bowie.
Leonard B. Rus, a CPA and tax partner at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore, recently was elected to the school board of Beth Israel Congregation, of Owings Mills. Rus received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in taxation from the University of Baltimore. Gross Mendelsohn is a full-service CPA and consulting firm.
Toby Gordon, an independent consultant in academic medicine and health policy in Baltimore since 2007, has been named secretary of the InterOrganization Network for 2010-11. ION is a national nonprofit organization representing 14 regional member organizations. Gordon represents Network 2000 on the ION board. Both organizations share the goals of advancing women in professional and executive roles. Gordon previously worked at Johns Hopkins Medicine, most recently as vice president for strategic planning and market research. She has served on the boards of health care management organizations and Maryland’s Governor’s Workforce Investment Board and the Board of Revenue Estimates Business Advisory Group. She has also served on boards for the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, The Park School of Baltimore, Aunt Hattie’s Place and Maryland’s Health Care for All initiative. She has a doctorate from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Ernie Paszkiewicz has been elected to the Community Law Center’s board of directors. The CPA is an audit and accounting partner at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore. He specializes in serving nonprofit organizations, manufacturers and wholesale distributors. Paszkiewicz received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Towson University and is a former Alumnus of the Year of the accounting department. He has been a leader in the Harford County Chamber of Commerce and the Hunt Valley Business Forum, and has provided accounting assistance to St. Ann’s Church, Mt. Nebo Holy Church and the Baltimore Metropolitan Motorcycle Association.
Jim Miller, a solo practitioner specializing in mediation and senior director of human resources with Johns Hopkins Bayview, has been elected for a second term as president of the Maryland Healthcare Human Resources Association. MHHRA is a not-for-profit association providing resources and education to health-care human resources professionals throughout Maryland.
Roslyn B. Brock, vice president, Advocacy and Government Relations, for Bon Secours Health System, headquartered in Marriottsville, was elected to a second three-year term on the board of the Catholic Health Association at the association’s 2010 Catholic Health Assembly. The association supports the Catholic health ministry’s commitment to improve the health status of communities and create quality and compassionate health care that works for everyone. Brock also chairs the NAACP National Board of Directors — its youngest chair ever and only the fourth woman to serve in this role.
Jeff Owens, chief financial officer for Clyde’s Restaurant Group, recently was elected chairman of the board of directors of the Restaurant Association of Maryland, in Columbia. Owens has worked for Clyde’s for the past 15 years after working as a CPA for 10 years. Other board officers are: John Knorr, Phillips Foods, first vice chair; Steve Smith, MHI Hotels, second vice chair; Norman “Doc” Hayes, Club Elite & Martini’s, third vice chair; Sherry Giovannoni, The Fish Market, treasurer; Eric King, Crab Shanty, secretary; and Jim Plamondon, The Plamondon Companies, immediate past chairman. Also, five new directors were elected: John Hinkle, Rossmann-Hurt-Hoffmann; Randy Marriner, Victoria Gastro Pub;
Jenny Schaefer, Willis; Dan Stevens, Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar (Elkridge); and Dean Turner, Darden Restaurants–Red Lobster.
Clinical Trials
Sandra Forman has joined Clinical Trials & Surveys Corp., of Baltimore, as a senior statistician. C-TASC’s biostatisticians offer statistical consulting, regulatory advice, monitoring services, biorepository management and data management services to government, university and private research organizations that are conducting clinical trials. Forman is principal investigator of two multi-center clinical trials that she is bringing to C-TASC. She had worked as a statistician with the Maryland Medical Research Institute in Baltimore since 1979. Forman worked for C-TASC on a part-time basis from 1990 to 2002.
Consulting
Kevin Schmitt has joined Immersion Consulting, of Annapolis, a provider of program management and expertise on enterprise-wide business systems for the Department of Defense, as director of strategic operations. He most recently served as Navy Headquarters practice director at RGS Associates.
Education
Daniel G. Ennis, executive dean for administration at Harvard Medical School, has been appointed senior vice president for administration and finance at Johns Hopkins University, effective Aug. 2. He succeeds James T. McGill, who retired July 1 after more than 12 years in the position. He also served as Harvard University’s associate vice president for finance and financial planning, interim director of treasury management, and director of budgets, financial planning and institutional research.
Health Care
Dr. James L. Guzzo has been hired by The Vascular Center at Mercy Medical Center, of Baltimore, and Dr. Georgeta Giblen has been hired by the Department of Pathology. Guzzo is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University; he completed both his internship and residency in general surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center, and his vascular surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Giblen completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Georgetown University Hospital and her gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, D.C.; she specializes in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology.
Hospitality
Serol Gurun has returned to Turf Valley, in Ellicott City, as director of rooms, supervising the front office and housekeeping departments. He most recently was director of rooms and spa for The Jefferson hotel in Washington, D.C. Gurun has a bachelor’s degree from Towson University and last year received an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Housing
Robert Grossinger has joined Enterprise Community Partners, of Columbia, as vice president for national foreclosure response. He previously worked at Bank of America as senior vice president in the corporate social responsibility group overseeing neighborhood stabilization efforts, including real estate owned sales to Neighborhood Stabilization Program recipients. Grossinger will oversee the implementation of Enterprise’s U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development contract for NSP technical assistance.
Real Estate
Lauren Wayne has joined Continental Realty Corp., of Baltimore, as director of investor reporting. She was formerly controller for Sterling Partners, and a public accountant and auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Wayne will oversee external investor reporting activities, handle compliance with operating agreement requirements and manage fund audits, tax lien certificate servicing and reporting and managing fund distributions. She is a CPA and has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
