Smith Island cake wins over Senate

By: jackie.sauter

Smith Island layer cake got a sweet deal from the Maryland Senate on Monday; the body voted 44-1 to make the Eastern Shore’s creation our official state dessert.

The only senator to vote against the cake was Republican Sen. Alex Mooney, who told the AP he voted in jest because his county, Frederick, grows apples and he prefers the fruit pie.

Now, on to the House…

You don’t need shallow cake pans. Just use less batter in a regular cake pan.

My mother has been making this cake ever since I was born 73 years ago. She got the reciepe from her grandmother in Hungary.
It is called a Dobish Torte not the Smith Island cake. Copy Kats

Smith Island Cake is a cake, which is different from a torte, though people often misuse the terms and use “torte” for any thin, multi-layer cake.
