A Daily Record blog devoted to Legal Affairs

Meet the Authors

The On the Record Law blog was launched in October, 2007 and is a product of The Daily Record’s legal affairs staff.  We hope you will join the discussion with our talented writers.  They are:

Caryn Tamber (@caryntamber)

Caryn Tamber has been at The Daily Record since April 2005.

She covers the business of law —hiring, firing, salaries, diversity, mergers, work-life balance and anything else that falls under the category of law practice management — but has quite accidentally also become The Daily Record’s point person for other types of law stories, such as anything involving sex offenders.

Tamber compiles the On the Record blog’s Monday law blog round-up.

Brendan Kearney

Brendan Kearney covers the Baltimore City courts and the U.S. District Court of Maryland for The Daily Record.

Since joining the newspaper in 2007, he has written about the record-long detention of a cargo ship owned by a Guyanese chicken magnate, a retired Raven’s enduring quest to recover Hurricane Katrina-related insurance money lost to fraud, and the controversial firing of the state public defender, among other local legal happenings.

A Baltimore native and a graduate of Yale College, Brendan blogs most frequently about words written in federal court filings that make him sit up straight, or just laugh.

Danny Jacobs (@tdrdanny)

Danny Jacobs has been at The Daily Record since February 2008, covering Baltimore County courts, the University of Baltimore and University of Maryland law schools and the Maryland State Bar Association.

But he drops whatever he is doing for news involving the 2006 leak at an Exxon station in Jacksonville. Jacobs has also become the office authority of sorts on agriculture, thanks to an award-winning story about a Glen Arm dairy farm. (He milked a cow for that one, too.)

Born and raised in Baltimore County, Jacobs likes to blog about the lighter side of law – silly lawsuits, stupid criminals and anything related to sports and pop culture.

Steve Lash
Steve Lash covers the Maryland Court of Appeals and the General Assembly’s judiciary committees for The Daily Record.

He joined the newspaper in 2008 after spending nearly 20 years covering the U.S. Supreme Court and legal affairs for several publications, including the Houston Chronicle, Cox Newspapers, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, and West’s Legal News.

He was a contributing author to A Good Quarrel: America’s Top Legal Reporters Share Stories from Inside the Supreme Court, published in 2009 by The University of Michigan Press.

Lash, a graduate of American University’s Washington College of Law, is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court and Maryland bars.

Nicole Flatow

Nicole Flatow joined The Daily Record as assistant legal editor in October 2009. As the newest member of the editorial team, she is still developing her blog niche, and is happy to take suggestions from prospective fans.

Nicole earned her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2008. During law school, she worked with both nonprofits and a corporate law firm. Before coming to the Daily Record, she spent a year representing low-income clients in landlord/tenant cases and subsidized housing hearings for a Washington, D.C. nonprofit.

Nicole worked in legal journalism before law school, and is thrilled to be back in the game.
