Carlos Salinas was born on April 3, 1948, to economist and government official Raul Salinas Lozano and Margarita De Gortari De Salinas. He was the second son and one of five brothers. President Adolfo López Mateos named Salinas’ father as Minister of Industry and Trade, but he was passed over for the PRI presidential nomination in favour of Gustavo Daz Ordaz (1964–70).
