During this time, he became OVW Heavyweight Champion and OVW Television Champion. He was moved up to the main roster on the 2nd of July 2007 episode of Raw where he was featured in a backstage segment with Dusty Rhodes and Randy Orton.  In 2008, he would align himself with Ted DiBiase and Randy Orton thereby forming the faction, The Legacy. The trio would have notable feuds against Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Batista.

After the end of The Legacy, he focused on singles action and became the WWE Intercontinental Champion in 2011. He would be the Intercontinental champion for 233 days before ultimately losing it to Big Show at WrestleMania XXVIII. For the years to follow he only got moderate success at best and in 2016, he left WWE.

For the period between 2016 and 2019, he worked for various promotions including, Ring of Honor, Impact Wrestling, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He would become a massive wrestling star during this time and would win various championships in the process. He would become the ROH World Champion, IWGP United States Championship, and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion during the period mentioned.

One of the best things about this run was that he would become a part of the legendary faction, Bullet Club. Off-screen, he would become great friends with Bullet Club members, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega. On the 1st of January 2019, he revealed that he along with his Bullet Club friends, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega would serve both as on-air talent and Executive Vice Presidents of All Elite Wrestling.
