Inception

On May 30, 2010, FaZe Sniping made its YouTube debut. Eric “CLipZ” Rivera, Jeff “House Cat” Emann (now identified as “Timid”), and Ben “Resistance” Christensen originally formed the group as a Call to Duty clan. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the trio earned a reputation for pioneering trickshotting. When Ted “Fakie” joined the clan, their YouTube content took off.

FaZe then unveiled ILLCAMS, their most popular series on their channel. Compared to other Call of Duty channels that were based on wiping, FaZe Clan’s emphasis on trickshotting and a personality/social-media approach contributed to FaZe Clan becoming one of the first successful YouTube video game channels.

The clan started competing in e-sports tournaments after the channel reached one million subscribers in 2012. FaZe Clan participants were divided into two camps when they started participating in tournaments such as the Call of Duty Championship and the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championships, which were independent from the clan’s YouTube video producers.

FaZe Clan did not have an organizational structure at all, but Thomas “Temperrr” Oliveira, a Brazilian who had been a part of FaZe since he was 16 years old, was the first CEO. In Plainview, New York, Oliveira and COO Richard “Banks” Bengston founded the first FaZe shared home in 2014.

In 2015, Sebastian Guerts, the founder of the former social media site Hubrick, agreed to invest in FaZe Clan. Hubrick hired Lee Trink, a former album executive, to be the company’s CEO. FaZe Clan acquired G2 E-sports’ Counter-Strike: Global Offensive international lineup in January 2016, and they played as FaZe Clan in the 2016 MLG Major Championship: Columbus, Ohio The squad came in second place at ELEAGUE Major: Boston 2018, losing to Cloud9 from the United States.

In 2017, Bengston relocated to Los Angeles, where he founded the Clout House, a new shared home for YouTubers. In 2017, FaZe Clan finished second in the ESL Pro League Season 6 and second in the ESL Pro League Season 7 and ESL One Cologne 2018. In 2017, FaZe Clan won the ELeague CS:GO Premier, taking home $500,000 in prize money.

Greg Selkoe, the founder of streetwear web store Karmaloop, was appointed president of FaZe Clan in 2018, with CEO Lee Trink assuming the position of CEO full-time. FaZe Clan announced the start of their series A funding round in late 2018.

FaZe Clan received investments from singers Ray J, DJ Paul, Offset, Swae Lee, Yo Gotti, Pitbull, and Disco Fries, basketball players Meyers Leonard, Josh Hart, Ben Simmons, Jamal Murray, footballer Gregory van der Wiel, skateboarder Nyjah Huston, radio host Big Boy, music entrepreneurs Sylvia Rhone, Troy Carter, and Guy Oseary, and actor Chris Oseary in 2019.

FaZe and mobile e-commerce company NTWRK closed their series A round in December 2019, led by entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine. FaZe Clan received a $22.7 million investment loan from Canaccord Genuity, a Canadian finance firm, in January 2020. FaZe Clan announced its co-ownership of CTRL, a food supplement firm, on June 18, 2020.

FaZe Clan declared the formation of Red Reserve as a branch of the organization on December 5, 2014. They continued to publish related material to FaZe’s until June 2016, when they parted ways with FaZe to pursue other possibilities under their own banner. FaZe Clan and Michael Sugar, film and television producer and founder of Sugar23, collaborated to create FaZe Studios in April 2020, according to reports.

Independent films and scripted TV shows will be the studio’s primary focus. Owing to the shortage of live programming provided by conventional networks during the pandemic, the initiative was accelerated. Crimson, their first film, premiered on October 29, 2020, and stars Brian “Rug” Awadis.
