Antetokounmpo was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian immigrants. His parents had moved from Lagos three years before, leaving their firstborn son, Francis, with his grandparents. In 2007, Antetokounmpo started playing basketball. He was actively interested in the game in 2009, featuring for the Filathlitikos youth team in Greece. Antetokounmpo progressed through the ranks at Filathlitikos, eventually earning a place on the senior squad in 2011. He played in Greece’s semi-pro league as well as the Greek 3rd Division since joining the Filathlitikos senior side. Antetokounmpo spent the 2012 season in the Greek A2 competition, the country’s second-tier basketball league. Facing interest from other clubs such as Barcelona and Efes, Antetokounmpo signed a four-year deal with CCAI Zaragoza in December 2012 when he was 18 years old.
Antetokounmpo spent the rest of the season with Filathlitikos in Greece, where he averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 26 games.
