Billie Joe Armstrong and his friend Mike Dirnt and Sean Hughes (Drummer) established a band named Sweet Children in the year 1987 when they were 15 years old. Their first song was “Best things in town,” which was written by the three of them. In October 1987, the band first time performed live at Rod’s Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California.

Later, Armstrong and Dirnt began working with John Kiffmeyer, the former Isocracy drummer, in 1988. In the same year, the band got lucky and was signed by Lookout Records, which Larry Livermore owned. In the following year (1989), the band recorded their first extended play named 1,000 Hours. Later, before the release of their debut album, the band changed their name to “Green Day” because of the fascination of group members for cannabis.

In the early 1990s, the band released its first studio album named 39/ Smooth. After the band’s first nationwide tour, Kiffmeyer left the East Bay to attend Humboldt State University in Arcata.
