Kattie B. Screws are the names her parents gave her after she was born on 4th May 1930 in Clayton, Alabama. Her parents were Prince Albert Screws and his wife Martha. When Katherine was two years old, she got sick from polio and though she healed, she was left with a permanent limp which can be noticed when she is walking. She was born in a family of two children who were both daughters. That mean her other notable family member is her younger sister Martha Screws.
When she was around four years, her dad changed his name from Screws to Scruse. He also decided to change his daughter’s name to Katherine Esther.
