Inception
Activision was founded on the 1st of October by Larry Kaplan, David Crane, Alan Miller, Bob Whitehead, and Jim Levy serving as the CEO of the game development company. Activision was created by former Atari game developers who weren’t happy with their treatment at their former company.
To make Activision’s games different from Atari, the boxes in which their games arrived had a bright color and featured an in-game screenshot on the back cover. They gained huge success with the release of his 1982 video game, “Pitfall!” which sold more than 4 million copies. The company then had its first initial public offering in 1983.
Evolution
In 1983, things changed for every video game development company during the infamous video game crash of 1983 and Activision was no different. Its sales fell and so did their revenue. Larry Kaplan left the company that year while Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead left the following year. It began focusing on developing home computers by creating games like “Little Computer People” and “Hacker”.
In 1986, it acquired Infocom, and six months later, Bruce Davis replaced Jim Levy. David Crane also left the company in the same year. A couple of years later in 1988, it also began to get involved in business applications and changed its name to Mediagenic, which comprised Activision, Infocom, Gamestar, and Ten Point O. In 1988, it released the popular game, “The Manhole”. Bruce Davis’s time with the company didn’t lead to great results and in 1991 Activision was finally sold to Bobby Kotick and other investors.
The company then released the game, “Return to Zork” which turned out to be a success. In 1992, Mediagenic went back to being named Activision once again. The new Activision went public in 1993. Its games, “MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear’s Legacy”, and “MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries” generated upwards of $70 million in sales for the company. In 1997, it released the game, “Heavy Gear” which was a massive critical success.
Three years later, in 2000, the company changed its name to Activision Publishing, Inc. From 1997 to 2008, the company made 25 acquisitions including, “Raven Software”, “Infinity Ward”, and “Toys for Bob”. In 2008, Activision merged with Vivendi Games and became Activision Blizzard, which was then valued at $18.9 billion. Activision Publishing remained a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard following the merger.
Eric Hirshberg served as the CEO of Activision publishing from 2010 to 2018. In 2011, Activision published the hit game, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” which was jointly developed by both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. The game was an enormous success to say the least, as it not only grossed $400 Million but also sold 6.5 million copies in the U.S.
