After being trained by his mother, Rippon began skating when he was ten years old. Yelena Sergeeva started coaching him in 2000 and lasted for seven years until 2007. After participating in several other junior championships, he left Sergeeva in 2007 to join Nikolai Morozov.

He won a gold medal again and went ahead to compete in the U.S. Championships of 2008. He competed in 2013 Skate America and finished fourth. In October 2014, he competed in the 2014 CS Finlandia Trophy and finished 1st in the free program, then 2nd overall. His next win was in 2016, where he won gold at the 2016 U.S. Championships. After the 2017-18 season, he announced his retirement on 19 November 2018.
