Bernard Humphrey Hopkins Jr was born on January 15, 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania U.S. He is the son of Bernard and Shirley. He was raised up in a housing project named Raymond Rosen in Philadelphia. Hopkins started to engage in crime at a very young age. At only 13 he had been stubbed 13 times for mugging people.

At 17 years he was sent to Graterford prison being sentenced for 18 years for nine felonies. In 1988 he was released from prison after five years. He changed his religion to Islam and changed his positive energy to boxing to escape from his dark past. His personal discipline was acquired from the experience he has while at Graterford prison.

On October 11, 1988 he made his boxing debut as a light heavyweight in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He lost to Clinton Mitchell. He fought on several other matches who build his confidence and experience. Hopkins did not find his niche until May 22, 1993 when he faced off against Roy Jones Jr. one of the best boxers for the IBF middle weight title that was vacant at the time.

The tough fight went on for 12 hours with Hopkins losing 116-112 by unanimous decision. Although he lost the fight he gained people’s attention for being a tough fighter. On April 29, 1995 Hopkins knocked out Segundo Mercado in the seventh round and won IBF middleweight title. He continued to fighting over the time but still managed to retain his title.

On September 29, 2001 Felix Trinidad challenged Hopkins for WBA middleweight title. Trinidad had the advantage of winning the match, but in the 12th round Hopkins gave him a heavy punch that won him the fight by a technical knockout.  He won WBA title at the same time maintaining his WBC title.

Hopkins became a champion for several years; he fought several fights without losing. In September 2004 he had a fight against Oscar De La Hoya for the WBO Middle weight title. He knocked out his opponent in the 9th round becoming the first ever boxer to hold four major championships. However he lost to Jermain Taylor in the year 2005.

On May 2011Hopkins won over Jean Pascal to secure the WBC Light heavyweight title. He went on record as being the oldest world championship in boxing history. Then in 2013 he broke his own recording a fight that made him the winner of IBF heavyweight title at the age of 48. His maintained physic and experience allowed him to compete even to an age when most boxers consider quitting. However Hopkins retired in 2016 at 52 years of age.
