Bobbie Gentry was born on 27 July 1942 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, near Woodland. She is the daughter of Ruby Lee and Robert Harrison Streeter. Her parents divorced few months after she was born, and her mother relocated to California. She was raised on her paternal grandparent’s farm in a home without electricity or plumbing.

Her grandmother exchanged a cow with their neighbor for a piano. She composed her first song at the age of seven called “My Dog Sergeant is a Good Dog.” While living with her father in Greenwood, Mississippi, she learned how to play guitar and banjo.

At the age of thirteen, she moved to Palm Springs, California, to live with her mother, who had already remarried. They formed a short-lived duo, Ruby and Bobbie Meyers. She adopted her stage name from the 1952 film, Ruby Gentry, which she had watched on television.

Her performance attracted the BBC manager, and she was asked to host several programs on BBC 2. She was the first female artist to host a show on the networks.

Her third album, “Bobby Gentry and Glen Campbell,” was released in 1968, which was a collaboration with Campbell. Her fifth album, “Touch Them with Love,” did not attain much success. She released her sixth album, “Fancy,” in 1970.
