Attenborough was born in Isleworth, Middlesex, and grew up in College House on the campus of the University College, Leicester. Here his father, Frederick, was the principal. He is the middle child of three boys; his elder brother, Richard, became an actor and director, and his younger brother, John, was an executive at Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo.

In 1952, he joined BBC Television at Alexandra Palace and, began his famous Zoo Quest series in 1954. He saw the start of BBC2 with Michael Peacock as its Controller. He was eventually was responsible for the introduction of colour television into Britain, and also for bringing Monty Python’s Flying Circus to the world.
In 1969, he became the Director of Programmes with editorial responsibility for both the BBC’s television networks. He resigned in 1973 so that he could return to programme making. He started with Eastwards with Attenborough, a natural history series set in South East Asia, then The Tribal Eye, examining tribal art.
