In the 1950s, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he bought his first casino, called the 101 Club. He sold in 1964 but by this time he had acquired enough wealth to be flying across the California Arizona Nevada tri-state area. Bullhead City and Kingman in Arizona and Needles in California witnessed a lot of residents arriving in the areas after the construction of the Davis Dam in 1951.
Don saw this as an opportunity to create a resort that would also serve as a stop along the Route 66 freeway. He bought a motel for $250,000 and it became a huge success because it attracted guests who wanted to gamble and also travelers.
The resort had 12 slot machines and two lie gambling tables. Only four rooms were available because the other four were occupied by Don’s family. The resort is now known as the Riverside resort after it went under a number of expansions.
It did so in 1972, 1975, and so on. 42 rooms were added in 1972 and in 1975, 48 new rooms were added. Still in 1975, a fourteen-story tower was put up with 307 new rooms and an automotive museum. After its last big expansion in 1994, the resort currently has 1405 rooms and also a bowling center.
