Lynn Hospital in Lynn, Massachusetts, was the birthplace of Parsons. Elinor Ingeborg (née Mattsson), her mother, was a native of Sweden, and Eben Parsons, her father, was of English origin. In 1983, while co-starring in a new Ernest Thompson stage play in Los Angeles with fellow Academy Award winner Jack Lemmon, Parsons appeared on the November 1 broadcast of The Tonight Show, informing Johnny Carson that Lemmon had been her first boyfriend in the 1940s.
