The five members of the group were contestants on the second season of X-Factor as individual acts. However, after four of them were unable to proceed to the “Young Adults” category, they were put together as one group. As a group, there were able to proceed in the category and were taken under the wing of Demi Lovato, L.A. Reid, Britney Spears and Simon Cowell. Their first name wasn’t Fifth Harmony, they initially experimented with Lylas and 1432. The group did well in the season and eventually finished at third place.

After their season performance, they were signed on Simon Cowell.s record label, Syco Music, and L.A. Reid’s Epic Records in a joint deal. Unfortunately for the group, Camila Cabello left the group to pursue her solo career. They did their first performance without Cabello on January 17, 2017. On June 2, 2017, they released their single, Down, which peaked at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group went on to release a number of singles as a group of four. On March 19, 2018, the group announced their decision to take an indefinite hiatus to pursue solo projects.
