Before coaching St Joseph’s University until 1979, Geno had coached the women’s basketball at Bishop McDevitt HS in Wyncote. In 1981, he took a break of two years to take the position of assistant coach at his former high school, Bishop Kenrick. He then assumed the position of assistant coach with the University of Virginia Cavaliers Women team.
He then joined the Huskies Women’s Basketball team, but before he arrived in 1985, the team had only one winning season in history. During the assessment of this position, most of the qualified candidates were women. Another one included in the interview process was Chris Dailey, who became his assistant. Had he turned down the position, Chris would have taken that offer.
By 2001, he became the head coach of the US women’s team. The team participated in the 2001 Junior World Championship in Brno, in the Czech Republic, and was able to win the first five games. In 2006, Auriemma won his 600th game and then the 700th game on 27 November 2009. With this win, he became the fastest head coach in the history of college basketball. He is among the eight active women’s basketball coaches to reach 700 or more wins.
On 6 March 2012, he became the sixth coach in Women’s basketball to reach 800 wins. He reached 900 wins on 3 February 2015 out of 1034 games. In 2014, he became the US Women’s Basketball head coach for the 2014 FIBA World Championship.
