His father was a high school English teacher and a baseball coach at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan. He is of English, German and Irish descent on his father’s side and of Danish and Norwegian descent from his mother’s side.

Iggy kicked off his career as a drummer for various high school bands including “The Iguanas”. He dropped out of the University of Michigan and moved to Chicago to explore blues. Inspired by this type of music, he formed The Stooges and was composed of Ron and Scott Asheton, Dave Alexander and himself.

After watching Jim Morrison and another band perform in 1967, he got his inspiration for his wild stage antics and unique stage performances. Unfortunately, the band disbanded in 1970 after the release of Fun House due to Pop’s worsening heroin addiction.
