Terry was drafted with the 10th overall selection in the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks in 1999. Terry had a team and career high 19.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.3 steals in the 2000–01 season.

Terry was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks on August 4, 2004, along with Alan Henderson and a potential first-round draft pick, by the Hawks in exchange for Antoine Walker and Tony Delk.
