Davis’ career did not kick off immediately with writing and drawing comic strips, Jim started off at an advertising agency before moving on to comic strips. In 1969, he assisted Tom Ryan with his comic strip, Tumbleweeds.

Later on, from 1973 to 1975, Davis wrote a comic strip called the Gnorm Gnat which was usually published in the Pendleton Times, a newspaper in Pendleton, Indiana. Davis decided to sell the strip to a national syndicate which did not go too well for him. His art was commended, his gags were funny, but they did like the idea of the characters being bugs.

However, this was not enough to put Jim down, he began studying different comic strips and still believed that animals were funny. He took note of how Snoopy from the Peanuts comic was more of a marketing success than his owner, Charlie Brown.

Since there were enough dogs in the comic industry, Jim decided to go another direction, with a cat as his lead character. Before gaining its popular name, it was named Jon and by 1978, it was syndicated in 41 newspapers.
