Jimmy John Liautaud began his career in 1982 after completing his high school education. His father loaned him $25,000 to open a business of his choice in exchange for a 48% stake in the business. His father also added the condition that if he failed to make the business successful, he would have to enlist in the US Army.
He initially wanted to open a hot dog stand but changed his mind after realizing that the cost of opening such a venture didn’t fit in his budget. He decided to open a sandwich shop by purchasing high-quality meats from the neighborhood market and baking his own bread. On the 13th of January 1983, he opened Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches opened in Charleston, Illinois.
The menu only had four sandwiches at the time. The sales weren’t great due to the location of the store but he countered this by adding delivery facilities. Apart from that, he also gave samples to the nearby Eastern Illinois University dorms. He began earning profit by the end of the first year as a result of all his efforts. By the end of the following year, he paid his father back and became the sole owner of the business. He opened two more stores by the end of 1987.
He met the popular businessman, Jamie Coulter in 1988 who helped him grow his business vastly. Four years later, Jamie helped him sell his first Jimmy John’s franchise, along with the 10 other stores he owned. By 2020, the company had 200 stores and out of these stores, he looked after 20.
He then visited 70 of the poorest performing stores and 18 months later, the stores began performing much better. In January of 2007, the popular private equity firm, Weston Presidio to help acquire better locations for the company. The popular private equity firm bought a 33% stake in the company and also closed on over 100 real estate deals.
In 2016, Roark Capital Group became the owner of the company, and his stake in the company was reduced to 35% but he stayed on as the Chairman of the board. In 2019, Roark Capital Group’s Inspire Brands became the owner of the group. Following that, Jimmy works as an adviser to the board of Inspire Brands.
