Elway together with his twin sister Jana, were born in Port Angeles, Washington. He is the son of Jack Elway and Janet Elway. His father was the head coach at Port Angeles High School at that time. He also had an elder sister named Lee Anne who was only one year older than the twins. Due to his father’s job as a football coach, the family moved a lot from one place to another.

He also played baseball and was drafted by the New York Yankees to play for their affiliate team, Oneonta Yankees in 1982. Elway graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He is a member of the Delta Tau fraternity.

In 1984, John married Janet Buchan who was also a student at Stanford University and was also a member of the Swimming team. The two later separated in 2002 and finalized their divorce in 2003. The couple’s marriage gave birth to four children, Jessica, Jordan, Jack and Juliana.
Jessica also attended Stanford University and was a member of the basketball team during her freshman year. She later became the first daughter to introduce her father as an inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jack on the other hand followed in his father’s footsteps in playing quarterback for the Arizona State University but later quit the team.
John’s twin sister died of lung cancer in 2002 while his father had died of a heart attack the previous year. Elway met Paige Green in 2005 and were married in 2009 and have been together ever since.
