Henry began his business career by trading soybeans and corn futures in order to learn hedging and price risk of commodities. Reynolds Securities broker asked him to advise farmers in 1976 but rejected it. He then learned methods of managing futures while residing in Norway with his wife.
In 1981, he founded John W. Henry & Company and opened an office in Irvine, California. He traded and marketed to various commodity brokerage firms in the United States. The company had grown by 1983 and moved its offices to Newport Beach. The company began taking retail clients in 1982. In 1989, he moved to Westport in Connecticut, where he established his second office at Boca Raton.
Growing up, he was a great fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, which drew him to purchase a professional sports ground. In 1989, he purchased the Tucson Toros, a Minor League Baseball. Later he was among the founders of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He negotiated to buy the Orlando Magic NBA team in 1990. After purchasing a small interest of New York Yankees in 1991, he entered Major League Baseball. In 1999, he purchased Florida Marlins from Wayne Huizenga for $158 million and became the sole owner. He later sold it in 2002.
He purchased Boston Red Sox in collaboration with Tom Werner and the New York Times. He became the principal owner while Werner, the chairman and together set up an office headed by Larry Lucchino. They later established New England Sports Venture in 2001, which also owns the Boston Red Sox and also New England Sports Network. The latter later changed its name to Fenway Sports Group. Fenway took over Liverpool in 2010.
