Johnny Gill began his career while singing in a gospel vocal group that was made up of him and his brothers. His performance was very busy that he did not get the proper chance to attend classes and a solution to the problem he had private tutors. After graduating from high school, he decided to focus on his career full time.
In 1982, his childhood friend Stacy Lattisaw convinced his to record a demo which happened to fall in the hands of the then president of Atlantic records. In 1983, he released his debut album. Later, he teamed up with Stacy to produce a duet album named Perfect conditions. In 1985, he released a second solo album named Chemistry.
In 1987, Gill was recruited into the music group New Edition after Bobby Brown was kicked out of the group. He became the only member of the group who was not from Boston. Together with the group, he continued to release hit songs. In 1990, he released another self-titled album which included hit songs such as My, My, My. In 1993 and 1996, he released Provocative and Let’s Get the Mood Right. Both albums were a success and in 1996 he reunited with New Edition to release the album Home Again.
