Inception

Kiss was initially known as Wicked Lester which was a rock band based in New York City. After some time, the group regrouped and decided to form the Kiss rock band in 1972. Stanley and Simmons came across an ad that was placed in Rolling Stone which was an East Coast version. The add was placed by Peter Criss who was a drummer who was a New York City scene drummer who previously played in Chelsea and Lips band.

Stanley and Simmons went to the nightclub where Criss used to play drums and after hearing Criss sing, they both agreed that Criss should be part of the new band they were working on. Criss was interested and excited with the offer and he agreed to audition for the band and he passed the audition.

The focus of the three young men was on much harder style of rock than what Wicked Lester played. In early January 1973, Ace Frehley joined the group and became the lead guitarist. Frehley appeared in the auditions wearing sneakers with two different colors, one was red and the other was orange. However, he was able to win the hearts of the group.

A few weeks after Ace became part of the band, they solidified the classic lineup and they agreed to name the band Kiss. They also came up with their image and experimented by wearing various outfits and makeup. Don Ellis who is the director of Epic Records A&R allowed the band to play a showcase for him. Their main aim was to secure a record deal with them.

Evolution

The name Kiss was derived from a conversation Criss and Simmons had when they enjoying a drive around New York City. Criss told Simmons that he was formerly a member of a band that was known as Lips and immediately Stanley asked “What about Kiss” or something with that effect? Then Ace came up with the “SS” logo which has now become their iconic logo and looks like lightning bolts.

This logo came up when Frehley was trying to write the name of the new band over a “Wicked Lester” poster outside the club where the band was going to perform. He later designed the logo with a ruler and a sharpie but unfortunately the two S’s appeared nonparallel since he had done it “by eye”.

When asked whether they would have the SS redrafted, they said it has gotten them that far and there was no reason of trying to change it. According to Ace, their number one rule is to live with no rules and it had to start with the logo. The band was ready to go and they started recording their own albums.

Their first performance was in January 30th 1973 and although their audience was made of less than 10 people in what was initially known as Popcorn Club but it is currently known as Coventry and it was renamed shortly after and it is located in Queens. Their earnings for two sets that night was $50.

Awards

The band is not only known for its success but they have also earned great awards and nominations. Some of these include; 2 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, 16 Metal Edge Readers’ Choice Awards, one MTV Video Music Awards nomination and 1 People’s Choice Awards among many others.
