He has three sisters, Pearl Holmes, Antoinette Holmes, and Redell Hurst, and eight brothers, John Henry Holmes, Jr., Floyd Z. Fede, Charles, Robert, Perry, Jacob, Mark, and Leander Holmes. In 1954, his family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania while his father moved to Connecticut, where his father began working as a gardener. As a result, his father couldn’t contribute much to the family financially and the family mostly survived on welfare.

Although Larry Holmes began his boxing career at the age of 19, he only turned professional in 1973. His amateur career reads 19-3. He had his first professional fight on the 21st of March 1973, against Rodell Dupree, which he won in the fourth round itself. Larry served as a sparring partner for popular boxers like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier during the early part of his career.
In 1978, he defeated Earnie Shavers which brought him much recognition. The same year, he won the WBC Heavyweight Championship from Ken Norton. Over the following years, he successfully defended the title against the likes of Mike Weaver, Muhammad Ali, Gerry Cooney, and Joe Frazier.
In 1983, he was given the option of receiving $2.55 million to fight Greg Page or be stripped of the title. He didn’t agree with the amount he was offered and as a result, relinquished the WBC championship. Even after relinquishing the championship, he was regarded as the lineal champion and the world champion by The Ring.
The following year, he successfully defended the IBF title against James “Bonecrusher” Smith. In 1985, Larry lost the title to Michael Spinks and lost in the rematch as well which happened in 1986. On the 6th of November 1986, he announced his retirement.
However, he came out of retirement on the 22nd of January 1988 to box the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion at the time, Mike Tyson. However, he wasn’t successful. In 1997, he boxed Brian Nielsen, which would be his last championship match. His final match took place on the 27th of July 2002, against Eric “Butterbean” Esch, which he won by a 10-round unanimous decision.
