He played for the Miami Hurricanes in 1978. After leaving Miami, he then played for the Montreal Alouettes in a Canadian Football League. He signed with Green Bay Packers though he did not play the 1982 season. He retired from his football career in 1984 with the United States Football League, playing for Memphis Showboats, Jacksonville Bulls and Tampa Bay Bandits. He was in the same team with his future rival in WCW, Ron Simmons, while playing with the Bandits.

After being involved in a domestic dispute where Luger hit Hulette, he was charged with battery and was released on a $2500 bond. In May after Miss Elizabeth’s death, Luger was arrested for possession of drugs which caused her death after being mixed in her drink. He was later released on bail, $27, 500 and Elizabeth’s death was deemed accidental.

After being trained by Hiro Matsuda, he joined Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF), and his first win was on 31 August 1985, where he defeated Cocoa Samoa. In 1987, he began working with Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP).

He attained his second NWA United States Championship from 1989, attaining it from Barry Windham. Although he lost the title to Stan Hansen, he won it back in 1990. From 1991, he began competing for World Heavyweight Champion challenging Ric Flair. His loss during SuperBrawl II made him join the world Bodybuilding Federation (WBF) as a host on Saturday Morning Program.

He joined World Wrestling Federation in 1993 after being involved in an accident and WBF being closed. He was not active between 2002 and 2007. He has been working with WWE since 2011, this time with the wellness policy of the company.
