Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was commissioned in the U.S. Military Intelligence as Second Lieutenant in 1981. His service life started with migration throughout the country with multiple postings, including Fort Bragg, North Carolina with 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps and Joint Operations Command. In Joint Operations Command he was deployed for Invasion of Grenada and Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.

In 1983, he was deployed to Grenada where an incident happened that two soldiers were stranded in the vast tides of the ocean. He gave a jump from a 40-foot cliff and brought them back to the shore to be airlifted, for this unauthorised action he was answerable to the commanding officer, but then also he was given respect for what he did for his men.

From 2001, he was the Assistant Chief of Staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Until July 2002, he was the Director of Intelligence of Joint Task Force 180 in Afghanistan. From 2002 to 2004 he was recommended to the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade. After serving a few years, he became the Director of Intelligence for United States Central Command and the Joint Staff.
