Stone met the commander of Ulster Defense Association, Tommy Herron, along with his three friends who were later withdrawn after they could not kill a German Shepherd dog. He was confined for stealing and served six months imprisonment for stealing guns. Later he was jailed for stealing a car. After Herron’s death, Stone left UDA and joined Red Hand Commando (RHC), a loyalist group under Sammy Cinnamond.

In 1984, Stone reactivated his membership to UDA and was granted permission by Andy Tyrie. He committed his first murder after he killed Catholic milkman Patrick Brady on 16 November 1984. He attempted to kill Robert McAllister in 1985 but was not successful. In November 1985, he killed Kevin McPolin, and in 1987, he was charged with the murder of Dermont Hackett.

In March 1988, Stone killed three people during a funeral at Milltown Cemetery and was jailed for 13 years, only to be released on 24 July 2000 under the Good Friday Agreement. He has also been arrested for attempting to attack Parliament Building.
