It was on 4th of April in 1975 when Paul Allen and Bill Gates decided to develop and sell what they referred to as BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. The duos intention was to make money using their computer programming skills. In 1972, the two founded Traf-O-Data which vended a rudimentary computer good in tracking and analyzing automobile traffic data.

Allen decided to join Washington State University to pursue a degree in computer science while Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University. Allen however decided to drop out of school and started working at Honeywell. Popular Electronics issued a January 1975 issue that featured Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) for Altair 8800 microcomputer which worked as a great inspiration for Allen and he suggested to them that they could program a BASIC interpreter that would work for the device.

Gates contacted MITS and informed them that he had a working interpreter. Luckily, they agreed to have him demonstrate it to them. Gates concentrated on working on the interpreter while Allen’s work was working on a simulator for the device. This was the beginning of their successful business as they moved from one level to the next.

In 1980, they started running the operating system (OS) that operated on its own version of Unix which was known as Xenix. Although this was okay, it was MS-DOS that solidified its dominance. In November 1980, they were offered a contract by IBM to provide them with a CP/M OS version products and they branded it as MS-DOS. However, upon receiving it, IBM decided to rebrand it to IBM PC DOS.

Evolution

On 20th November 1985, they released Microsoft Windows as a graphical extension of their MS-DOS despite the fact that they had jointly started developing OS/2 from the contract they had signed with IBM in 1984 August. On 2nd of April in 1987, they released their second version of OS known as OS/2 to OEMs or original equipment manufacturers. Due to their collision with IBM, the Federal Trade Commission examined Microsoft which marked the beginning of more than 10 years of legal clashes with the government. The company however didn’t stop there as they also continued working on Microsoft Windows NT.

Microsoft introduced their suite of Microsoft Office in 1990 which bundled separate applications like Microsoft Excel and Microsoft on 22nd May Microsoft Windows 3.0. Since then, they have launched many more software and to redefine what they already had in the market.
