Inception

Phish is an American rock band that was founded at the University of Vermont back in 1983. The original members were guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon guitarist Jeff Holdsworth and drummer Jon Fishman. Fishman and Anastasio met in October of 1983 after Anstasio overheard Fishman in his dormitory room playing drums and he requested him and Holdsworth to jam with him.

The trio placed a want-ad for a bassist around the university and that is when Gordon met them and eventually joined and became part of the band. The first place this team was able to perform for the first time was at the University of Vermont at Harris Millis Cafeteria on 2^nd of December in 1983. They played several classic rock covers which included two songs done by the Grateful Dead.

In the same year, they had another concert for a period of almost one year as one of them Anastasio pulled a prank with a friend which caused him a suspension from the university. He was forced to return to his hometown in Princeton, New Jersey and he reconnected with Tom Marshall his childhood friend. The two continued working on their music career and this time, they were writing songs.

They also recorded material that they placed on the Bivouac Jaun demo tape. The duo later joined Phish and they became part of the team and have contributed greatly in many of the songs sang by the band as songwriters. After being silent for almost one year, the band performed their first concert under the name Phish on 23^rd October 1984.

Evolution

Anastasio designed their logo as a stylized fish with the band’s name inside. They have tried to give several different origins to the group’s name including saying it is named after Fishman who is usually nicknamed as Fish. It was a way of thanking Fishman for coming up with the idea of forming the band. However, in 1996, Fishman denied that it was not named after him and said that the name was inspired by the sound of a plane taking off. In 1984, they collaborated with percussionist Marc Daubert who was also Anastasio’s friend.

Daubert, however, left the band in early 1985 and in the same year, McConnell joined the group temporarily but by the end of the year, he requested them to allow him to be a permanent member and they became a 6-member band for 6 months. Holdsworth however left the band following a religious conversion in March 1986. Since the band was formed, they have managed to release many mixtapes, albums, and singles.
