When at Royal Naval College, King George VI visited with his family, Phillip was asked by Louis Mountbatten and the queen to escort the King’s two daughters who were Elizabeth and Margaret. Philip and Elizabeth fell in loved and started exchanging letters. By then Elizabeth was 13 years old.

In 1946, Philip approached the king asking for is daughter Elizabeth’s hand in marriage which the king granted. This was on condition that there be no formal engagement until Elizabeth attains 21 years of age. Their engagement would be announced later on 10th July 1947.
