His professional career officially began in 1975 when he became the second player to be selected and cowboy’s first pick in the National football league draft and was immediately moved to be a middle linebacker where he became the backup for Cowboy legend Lee Roy Jordan. In his first two seasons he played on special teams including his rookie season where at the Super Bowl X when Dallas lost to Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 1977 Randy moved to the right Defensive tackle, the position that was occupied by Bob Lily from 1961-1974. In the same year he had his breakthrough with the game where named as an All-pro team for the first time as well as his first Pro-Bowl. During his birthday he was named co-MVP of Super Bowl XII alongside his teammate Harvey Martin which made him 1 of 10 defensive players to win that honor.

In 1978, he became the NFC player of year and went ahead to be named to nine consecutive all-Pro and Pro Bowl team. He decided to retire in 1988 having played a total of 2009 games in all the 14 seasons, he only missed one game in that time span. In his 14 years experience as a player he had played 3 super bowls and 6 NFC Championship games.

He had managed to accumulate111 sacks and   1,104 tackles (701 solo). In 1978, he had his highest single season with sack total of 16.  In 1994, he got elected to be in the Pro football Hall of Fame. Then randy noticed that he was being limited because of the injuries that he had gradually accumulated over time. In 1987 season he only got credits for 64 tackles.


In 1974 Randy won several honors and awards such as Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy. He was also named the most valuable player and in 1994 Randy was elected to the hall of fame by the college football. The following year he named to ABC sports All-time All-American team.
