The group Rascal Flatts was founded at Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar in Nashville in Tennessee. Jay DeMarcus and Gary LeVox are both from a musical family and also from second cousins. DeMarcus started living in Nashville in the year 1992, and there he also earned his first record deal with the Christian group called East to the west and with his brother-in-law James Otto. Later, DeMarcus also contacted LeVos, and he then convinced him to come to Nashville, and they then started making music together.

He also became the bandleader of Chely Wright’s band, and there he also met Joe Don Rooney, a guitarist in the same band. DeMarcus and LeVox also used to work at the Printer’s Alley nightclub, and there he worked as the part-time guitarist.
