Inception

Football was introduced to Madrid by the students and academics of Institución Libre de Enseñanza. These academics was made up of several Oxford and Cambridge university graduates. It was in 1897 when these students founded Sociedad Sky Football which is commonly known as La Sociedad (The Society). At the time, this was the only one based in Madrid and they used to play at Moncloa on Sunday mornings.

Unfortunately, three years later, there were some conflicts between members of the club which forced some of the members to leave the club and form a new one. This one was known as Nueva Sociedad de Football (New Society of Football).

Some of the members of the new club were Juan Padros, Julian Palacios and Carlos Padros. Carlos Padros and Juan Padros were brothers who later became future presidents of Real Madrid. The New Society of Football was later renamed Madrid Football Club in 1901. A restricting that took place in 1902 saw the club renamed New Foot-Ball Club.

After Juan Padros was elected the president of the club on 6th of March in 1902, he officially founded Madrid Football Club. In 1905, they won their first game against Athletic Bilbao in what was known as Spanish Cup Final. On 4th of January in 1909, they became the founding sides of the famous Royal Spanish Football Federation after the signing of Spanish FA by the club president Adolfo Melendez.

Evolution

In 1912, after moving between grounds, they finally decided to settle to the Campo de O’Donnell. In 1920, King Alfonso XIII granted the Real (Royal) title to the club. This led to the club changing its name from Madrid FC to Real Madrid. In 1929, they founded the first Spanish Football League.

The club led the first league season but unfortunately lest the last match to Athletic Bilbao. This means they became runners-up to Barcelona. They however never gave up and in the 1931-32 season, they won their first League title. They regained the title in the 1932-33 season which made it the first team to win this title (championship) twice.

The club, unfortunately, lost the title on 14th April 1931 after the Second Spanish Republic arrived they again started using their former name Madrid Football Club. They however didn’t stop playing football and during the Second World War, they beat Barcelona 11-1 on 13th of June in 1943 during the Copa del Generalisimo semi-final. They were named in honor of Generl Franco. Although there were claims that Barcelona lost due to intimidation by the police, this has been proven to be false allegations.
