Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation) was founded on the 7th of May 1946 in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Japan by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. The company holds the distinct achievement of creating Japan’s first tape recorder, Type-G.  In 1957, the name of Tokyo Tsushin was replaced with Sony. The first product that appeared with the branding of Sony was the TR-55 transistor radio. In 1957, Sony released TR-63 radio, which was a massive success in the U.S. and it opened a new market for the company.

In 1971, Akiro Morita became the President of the company.  Due to a global recession in the 1980s, almost every single company was hurt and Sony was no different. The sale of their electronic products declined and as a result, the company was forced to reduce its prices. In 1982, Norio Ohga became the President of the company. One of his most vital contributions to the company was that he encouraged the development of Compact Disc and PlayStation.
