Inception

Starbucks was initially established in Seattle, Washington, on 30th March in 1971. Three fellow mates who met in ‘University of San Francisco” decided to sell top-notch quality coffee beans and equipment for roasting coffee. Three friends (an English teacher) Jerry Baldwin, (history teacher) Zev Steel, and (writer) Gordon Bowker learnt roasting beans by the well-established entrepreneur “Alfred Peet”.

Bowker owned an agency of advertisement with Terry Heckler. Terry had a belief that words beginning from “St” are lucky. The trio engaged themselves in search of a good name for their company starting from “St”. They jumped from names like “Starbo” – a mining town located in Cascade range and finally ended up at “Starbucks” that is a character(chief mate) of the book Moby-Dick.

Evolution

Starbucks’ first store was established in Seattle at 2000 Western Avenue from the year 1971 to 1976. Then it was shifted to 1912Pike Place. It was a time where the company only sold roasted whole coffee beans. They had not started to sell brew coffee then. Initially (1984) they bought green coffee beans from Peet’s and finally started purchasing it from growers. By 1986, they were successful in expanding their stores to six in count in Seattle itself.

Starbucks Corporation was sold to the former manager in 1987 who re-branded his II Giornale coffee as Starbucks. In that same year, Starbucks was expanded outside Seattle in Vancouver, British Columbia, Waterfront Station and Chicago and then to North and Mid-West in 1989. Annually they roasted nearly 2,000,000 pounds (907,185) kg coffee.

With years passing by, the company started reaching all its height; they stated adding new products.

In 1992, Starbucks changed its logo outer shade from black to outer green, symbolizing peace and harmony. This also runs along with companies’ mission, i.e. “Inspire and nurture to human spirit t”. They also updated the font and position of the mermaid to make it visually perfect. In 2008, they decided to take up the previous logo, but it failed to bloom the costumers; instead, it turned a disaster.

In 2011, they again came back with a green logo, and few added little changes which worked wonders for them.

Today, Starbucks isn’t just limited to coffee but have diversified it to tea, ice creams, packaged goods, consumer products, and had successfully established a million-dollar empire.
