Stephen Ray Perry was born on the 22nd of January 1949 in Hanford, California. He was the only child of two Portuguese parents from Azores, Raymond Perry (Pereira) and Mary Quaresma. As a child, he developed an early passion for music. His father was a vocalist and co-owner of the radio station, KNGS. Unfortunately, his parents ended their relationship when he was eight years old and he ended up moving to his grandparents’ dairy farm.

When he was 16, Perry moved to Sacramento to start a band with his mates called Ice. Unfortunately, the band fell apart because of lack of any management. In 1975, he moved to Thousand Oaks, California where he formed a progressive rock band called Pieces. After a year and a half, the band disbanded because they couldn’t secure a recording deal. After his mother’s urgency, Perry was able to answer the call from Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of a San Francisco band called Journey.

Perry brought a new, more pop-influenced style sense to the band’s music. After some disgruntled fans here and there, Perry was able to win the hearts of his audiences with his new style and amazing tenor voice.

Perry was the lead vocalist on nine of Journey’s albums and in 1984, he released his first solo album, “Street Talk”, which sold more than two million units. While Perry was Raised on Radio tour with Journey, his mother fell ill, which meant he had to travel to San Joaquin to visit his mother during the recording sessions. This really affected the band and they disbanded in 1987.

Perry took a break from music for some years to get his head straight. In 1996, he reunited with the band and recorded another album, Trial by Fire. The album was a huge success and it was going to become platinum by the end of the year. Unfortunately, when Perry was hiking in Hawaii, he suffered a hip injury and couldn’t go on tour. He left the band afterward after they presented him with an ultimatum of getting a hip replacement surgery.
