His father was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was of Russian-Jewish descent but was brought up in Philadelphia. His mother on the other hand traces her roots from a Delaware farming family.

His parents met at St. Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial where they had gone to study painting. Since his mother was a Methodist, he chose to raise her son as a Methodist too. It is however not clear whether Teller was the only child or whether he had other siblings.
