He became a popular radio DJ in Seacoast area of New Hampshire in the early 1980s on Portsmouth’s WHEB. He played comedy records with music and offbeat interviews. This popularity led to additional TV and radio auditions. His first job on television was as a host of a local game show, Granite State Challenge, on New Hampshire Public Television.
He joined WBZ-TV in February 1982 as a general on-air personality. He began as a contributor on Evening Magazine and hosting short informational and show preview segments. He gained more popularity after replacing Buzz Luttrell on the early afternoon talk show and hosting WBZ’s weekend morning teenage discussion series, Rap-Around.
After gaining this much popularity in Boston, he hosted his early-morning radio show, The Tom Bergeron Show on WBZ Radio.
