The American Messenger Company, the UPS, was founded on 28 August 1907 by James Casey together with Claude Ryan. The company was placed in Seattle, Washington, with a capital of $100 which was debt. Deliveries were done on foot or by use of bicycle if the trips were longer. The main focus of this company was packaging delivery to retail stores for mail deliveries, and the main client was U.S. Post Office. For the first time, the company acquired a Model T Ford delivery vehicle in 1913.
The founders of the company, Casey and Ryan, merged with one of their competitors and formed Merchants Parcel Delivery. They then introduced consolidated delivery. Charlie Soderstrom joined this new company in 1916 and brought in more vehicles enabling more deliveries in the business.
The company had much grown by 1919 and moved out of Seattle to Oakland, California. The company changed its name to United Parcel Service as a way to remind them their expansion operations would remain united.
