Edmonds was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 10, 1959, to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. Barbara worked in a chemical factory as a manufacturing operator. Edmonds worked with funk singer Bootsy Collins, who called him “Babyface” due to his young appearance. As a drummer, he was a member of the band Manchild (which had a 1977 hit with band member Daryl Simmons called “Particularly for You”). In 1982, Edmonds was a member of George Kerr’s funk band, Redd Hott. He was a member of the Deele, a light-funk and R&B band. In 1983, he penned the song “Slow Jam” for the R&B band Midnight Star, which was one of his first major credits as a songwriter for other artists.

On September 18, 2007, it was announced. It was the first album released by Mercury Records, which had recently re-launched. On February 4, 2014, he released Love, Marriage & Divorce, a Grammy Award-winning duet album with Toni Braxton on Motown Records.
