In 1989, at Daytona 500, the season with DNF. He won his first Winston Cup at Rockingham, defeating Rusty Wallace by 3 seconds.

In 1990, he got his first finish in the big race by finishing at 21st place in Daytona 500. The controversy took place that he had raced with an illegal carburetor for which he has penalized 46 championship points. The 1991 season was worse compared to the previous season. Despite doing well, he never achieved the points he needed. Martin bagged 14 top fives, 17 top tens, five poles, and 6 th place in standings.

In 1992, he bagged 10 top fives, 17 top tens, one pole, and a sixth-place finish in standings. In 1993, he began by finishing 6 th in the Daytona 500. He bagged five wins at the end of the season, 12 top fives, 19 top tens, five poles to a 3 rd pls e finish in the standings.

In 1994, Martin raced in the Busch series and also became due to the mistake made by him in Bristol. Martin won 4 races in 1995. In 1996, for the first time in eight seasons, Martin was winless.
