Peretz Bernstein was born in Queens, New York City, and spent his early years in Woodmere, Long Island, before moving to North Miami Beach, Florida, with his Jewish family. Farrell’s father was a jeweler, and his mother was an artist who committed suicide when he was three years old, an experience immortalized in Jane’s Addiction’s songs “Then She Did” and “Twisted Tales.”

In Los Angeles, he became the guitarist for the post-punk band Psi Com, and he toured with other local musicians such as X, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone, and Minutemen. After Psi Com dissolved in 1985, Farrell met Eric Avery through mutual friends. Jane’s Addiction was born out of a series of jam sessions between the two of them. Bernstein used the alias Perry Farrell for himself at this period as a play on the word “peripheral.”
Farrell sought success with Jane’s Addiction after performing in a variety of LA bands. In the mid-1980s, the band made a name for itself by attracting a rabid fan base with legendary, high-energy performances in small LA rock clubs. In 2001 and 2003, Farrell toured with Jane’s Addiction once more. Jane’s Addiction released the album Strays in 2003.
